OK, so I forgot about my property blog!Soon after I kicked off this blog, I spent some time abroad working on a butting and refurbishment of one of our properties in India. Let me tell you, working out there is a different ball game. Take your budgeted schedule and triple it. The biggest lesson to be learnt when investing overseas is do your homework. Or, better still, work with a local partner. Particularly in immature or semi-mature markets, you’re really swimming with sharks. And there’s no better way to navigate those treacherous waters than to have some on the ground who knows the local market, is connected to people who can help you get things done, and most importantly, understands the legal system. Be prepared to be eaten alive, if you haven’t done your homework well before you dip your toe in the water. Anyway, more on my adventures in India another time. This is effectively a ‘bridging post’ to fill the long gap from last year and the good stuff that’s coming up. Stay tuned. |
